There has been much controversy about the genesis of tektites, their appearance and distribution in'strewn fields' suggests a meteoric origin, but their composition is more consistent with a terrestrial formation. Geologists generally believe tektites were created when massive impacts hurled molten surface rocks high into the atmosphere, then remelting on re-entry producing the characteristic shape and evidence of ablative heating. Other types may have been formed in situ by the extreme energies of a meteoric impact. However, an increasing number of experts feel that they could in fact suggest an extraterrestrial origin.
